IX.1.22 Pompeii. December 2007. Room 1, atrium looking north to room 7. According to Schone in BdI, “In the atrium because the floor was ruined, a large cistern was revealed.
The atrium showed the usual proportions and regular arrangement, except for the fact that the usual rooms to be found on the left side were missing. The walls were simply decorated in red, divided by distinct white stripes with some colourful ornament. On the second of these stripes to the left, there was a graffito “sabinis”, which was the only oscan inscription found in these excavations.”

According to Warscher –
“On the west wall, four red panels remained; divided by vertical narrow strips; nearly in the middle there was a wider strip, of around 0.60.
In the centre of the panels rectangles and medallions remained. On the rectangles, attributes of the deities were seen, with landscapes on the medallions. The medallions would have been on the north wall, and at least one remained on part of the wall near to the doorway of the room in the north-west corner of the atrium. Fortunately, the German Institute (DAIR) conserved two copies of watercolours of the landscapes.”
