VIII.5.9 Pompeii. March 2009. East side of entrance fauces on Via dell’Abbondanza, with puteal for a well in small doorway to shop at VIII.5.10

According to Maiuri,

“This house also opened onto the south side of the Via dell’Abbondanza, with a doorway in tufo between two shops.

It had a short but wide entrance corridor with undecorated walls in large part restored after the earthquake.

A stone threshold was on the external side of the doorway and one of travertine on the interior between the corridor and the atrium.

A puteal for a well was embedded in the left wall, where it would have been used above all by the neighbouring shop (another puteal was inserted in the dividing wall between the shops numbered 10 and 11.”
