VI.11.10 Pompeii. Found in room 45, small room on right side of room 43, on 10th September 1835. Mosaic of partridge stealing a mirror.

Now in Naples Archaeological Museum, inventory number 9980.

According to the information card –

Partridge on a basket with mirror.

Mosaic emblema in opus vermiculatum made from polychrome tesserae. A partridge is depicted against a black background.

The bird is shown lifting a mirror from a lidless basket by pulling it by its handle; the theme is inspired by a Hellenistic prototype by Sosus of Pergamon. (First half of the 1st century BC.)

(Pernice su cesto con specchio.

Emblema pavimentale in opus vermiculatum d tessere policrome.

Su un fondo nero è raffigurata una pernice che solleva, da un cestino scoperchiato, uno specchio, tirandolo su per il manico; il soggetto è ispirato a un prototipo ellenistico di Sosos di Pergamo. Prima meta del I secolo a.C.)

According to Fiorelli in PAH, II, (p.316) –

10th September 1835. And in the floor of the small room on the right, near to the right corner at the head of the magnificent tablinum, we have discovered a square mosaic sized 10.37 inches squared (0.26m squared) or in italian “di pal. 1 in quadro”, embedded in a piece of marble, showing a partridge in the act of removing a jewel from a beautiful chest whose lid has been overturned.”
