VI.9.6 Pompeii. c.1830. Drawing by Gell of the remains of the money chest on the east side of the atrium.
According to Gell –
“Bones of chests brick crusted in the marble, inside brass, outside iron, handles, locks, rosettes, nails, etc of bronze.
In first chest 45 gold and 5 silver coins, ancients had excavated in room behind and made a hole through the wall and got most of the money !!”
See Gell, W. Sketchbook of Pompeii, c.1830.
See book from Van Der Poel Campanian Collection on Getty website http://hdl.handle.net/10020/2002m16b425
This was a masonry base faced with marble, see PAH II, p.214.
Found in the chest were 45 gold coins, and 5 silver, see PAH III, p.89.
The chest had been partly rummaged through by the ancient scavengers.

VI.9.6/7 Pompeii. 1932. Looking north across atrium towards two chest bases on either side of left ala.
According to Pernice –
Found on the left ala next to the passage to the peristyle in the atrium.
Almost square lava block, walled with rubble stones (including bricks). The stone lies crookedly in the wall.
In the middle there is a long spike in the lead casting.
The base was moved at some point, which could be where the pieces of brick come from.
See Pernice, E., 1932. Hellenistische Tische, Zisternenmündungen, Beckenuntersätze, Altäre u. Truhen. Berlin, p. 75, Taf. 45.3.
