Jashemski 1974 excavations.

This includes photos of the “balloon” over the insula, with painted wooden spheres marking the root-cavities so that they could be clearly seen from above.

 

According to Wilhelmina, this insula was the last remaining area in the south-east which Maiuri had hurriedly uncovered and which they had not yet searched for root cavities.

A small house occupied the north part of the insula, but only one room had been uncovered.

The original soil contours had been almost entirely destroyed by the passage of trucks, and it was also necessary to leave an area as an access ramp.

In the area that they could excavate, Wilhelmina was able to find about 150 tree root cavities.

There were also three large piles of soil that had been in the insula at the time of the eruption, which she did not have time to remove.

Wilhelmina deduced that there would have been around 500 trees planted here, if they had all been planted at the same interval over the entire area.

Approximately 90% were small fruit or nut trees, allowing her to announce that she had found a large orchard.

This was the first large orchard to be found within the walls of the city.

The masonry triclinium in the orchard was shaded not by a pergola but by the spreading branches of three large trees, either fig or olive.

The tree-root cavity on the south-east corner of the triclinium definitely had the appearance of an olive, which would have been at least 50 years old.

An ornate plaque made of at least two varieties of marble decorated the table in the middle of the couches.

Between the small trees in front of the triclinium, a masonry altar was found.

Bones and shells found near to the triclinium were the remains of meals and sacrifice.
