1973 Jashemski Garden excavations

 

According to Wilhelmina,

«The Superintendency had been meticulously excavating this elegant Samnite house for some years, and the peristyle garden was now ready to be excavated.

Wilhelmina had asked them to leave about five feet of lapilli to protect the garden until they were ready to begin the excavation.

The Scavi workmen under her direction then removed the lapilli down to one foot, before she brought in her most experienced workmen to continue.

This was the first time she had excavated an undisturbed garden, and it was the first peristyle garden to be scientifically excavated.

The ancient ground level next to the west wall of the garden was the first to be uncovered. What she found, had the appearance of a large hat « a sombrero ».

The soil had been carefully shaped into a high mound, surrounded by a channel for water; and a root cavity filled with lapilli was found in the mound.

Eventually, five « sombreros » were found.

It was obvious that something special had been planted here, and that the plants had still been young, and provision had been made for them to get considerable amounts of water. The plants had been planted into the same sort of four-holed terracotta pots, that had been found in both the gardens of the House of the Ship Europa and the garden of Hercules.

A large tree-cavity was soon discovered in the north-west corner. Eventually another five large tree-root cavities and several smaller tree-root cavities were also discovered. There were also the cavities from the stakes that had propped the heavy branches laden with fruit or nuts ; and along the east and south edges of the garden were a row of small root cavities.

The shape of the tree-roots were indicative of being a fig, an olive and several fruit trees, possibly pear, cherry or apple.

Near the root identified as a fig, many small misshapen pieces of charcoal were found, which were later identified as being figs ».
