According to the Information card in Naples Archaeological Museum -

Between December 1766 and March 1767, armour and weapons were found carefully stored in two rooms of the gladiator’s barracks.

Many of the weapons found at Pompeii are adorned with relief decoration and damascened silver engravings. The fact that almost none of them show signs of blows suggests that they were worn during the opening procession, while smooth helmets were worn during the fights.

Due to its size, the large Atto-Chalcidian helmet could not have been actually worn.

It was probably used at the top of a trophy, clearly visible due to the gilding as a powerful and evocative symbol of strength.

This helmet belonged to a thraex, a gladiator armed like the Thracian warriors of south-eastern Europe.
The crest of this helmet ends in a griffin’s head and on the front, the helmet is decorated with a gorgon’s head, possibly Medusa.

On the front, the helmet is decorated with a gorgon’s head, possibly Medusa.

On the sides, there are dolphins, as well as tubes into which feathers could be inserted.

The gladiator’s face was covered by a two-part visor.

VIII.7.16 Pompeii. Gladiators dagger (pugnale) found in the Barracks with two other similar ones.

The handle is of bone and the blade is of iron and is double edged.

It was part of the equipment of a type of gladiator known as a retiarius (net fighter) who fought lightly armed.

Murmillo gladiators carried heavy equipment, including a broadsword and a large, rectangular shield.

The relief on the helmet’s crest depicts griffins being offered drinks by erotes (cupids).

Feathers could be inserted into tubes attached to the sides of the crest.

The head of Medusa, a mythological monster with snakes for hair, can be seen above the visor.

Above this is Mars Ultor, the god of war, in full armour.
