In accordo con
quanto proposto dal De Sanctis all’epoca dei primi scavi, l’edificio sarebbe da
interpretare come carcere/prigione. Tuttavia, ad oggi, l’idea prevalente è
quella di riconoscervi la sede dell’Aerarium, forse
spostato qui in seguito al terremoto del 62 a.D.
Un’altra possibilità è quella di interpretare i resti monumentali come quelli
di comuni botteghe (VII.7.24 –VII.7.25).
