V.4.3 Pompeii. 1899. Triclinium. Painting of Ariadne and Dionysus.
See Notizie degli Scavi di Antichità, 1899, (p. 342).
Kuivalainen describes –
“A composition of three figures (in the damaged condition of the painting) on a blue background.
In the foreground, a sleeping female figure reclines to the left; she wears a yellow cloak, which covers only her legs. On the left is (the head of) a youth wearing a vine wreath on his head. On the right there is a satyr with a pine wreath uncovering the sleeping woman.”
Kuivalainen comments –
“Bacchus discovers sleeping Ariadne, who is already dressed in a yellow robe suitable for brides. He is probably alone, except for the satyr on the other side of the picture. The vine-leaves, if not the korymboi, on his wreath are quite well grown.”
See Kuivalainen, I., 2021. The Portrayal of Pompeian Bacchus. Commentationes Humanarum Litterarum 140. Helsinki: Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters, (p.142, E2).

V.4.3 Pompeii. 1899. Triclinium. Painting of Ariadne and Dionysus.

See Notizie degli Scavi di Antichità, 1899, (p. 342).

V.4.3 Pompeii. March 2009. North wall of triclinium. According to Sogliano, rather than a painting of Europa on the bull, he thought he recognised a Nereid on a sea-bull, but this had nearly faded. In the side panels would have been medallions, those on the north and south walls showed a griffin on a white background.See Notizie degli Scavi di Antichità, 1899, (p.311-2)
