I.10.4 Pompeii. May 2010. Alcove 23, detail from Menander’s open paper scroll held in his hand.
According to Varone this used to read, in small black letters, the words

Menander
Hic primu[m] om[niu]m como
ediam scripsit
qu[i] E[rat] anno
ru[m] XIV
Lib[ri] IIII

According to Varone, this refers to the fact that Menander wrote his first comedy at the age of 14. Four books.

Della Corte read XIX instead of XIV, see CIL IV 7350b.
According to Cooley this translated to “Menander. He was the first of all to write comedy………four books”.
