According to Van der Graaff –
“The drain passing through the agger at the Porta Nola highlights how the formalization of water channels through the gates achieved an almost monumental status (see plate 18).
The inlet is an inconspicuous opening to the left of the steps leading up to the wall-walk.
It collected rainwater from most of the Via di Nola, which, given its length, must have yielded a considerable amount.
The channel through the agger is composed of concrete, implying that it is roughly contemporary with the gate’s vault dating to the second century BCE.
The opening on the opposite end is rather grand, sitting on a high base of travertine masonry extending out from the curtain wall.
The resulting petite bastion guided rainwater in a small cascade onto the road below, emphasizing the drainage of the Via di Nola every time substantial rain hit the city. Water has cut deep into the masonry, indicating that it functioned for a considerable period.
The masonry of the drain extension clearly abuts the curtain wall, indicating its later construction.
A striking feature is that engineers built the drain extension in travertine masonry in an effort to match the lower courses of the older adjacent wall curtain.”

“The eastern bastion of the Porta Nola is perhaps one of the most imposing stretches of the circuit, towering above anyone passing through the gate.”
